Indian Summer in Baby Bootcuts

Wednesday 25 September 2013

I had a moment.

I had a moment where I was feeling all kind of seventies boho which was brought on by the unexpected Indian summer which happened over the weekend. Which promptly inspired a flirtation with some mini bootcut jeans. The Oasis Eva bootcuts to be precise. I had a previous dalliance earlier on in the year too with some old Wranglers. Remember?

On the Sunday I wore this to a small thing birthday party :

Isabel Marant blouse, Oasis jeans, Krimble sandals

And on the Monday I wore this :

French Connection top, Oasis Jeans, Krimble sandals

Notice the "I'm a little teapot" stance I have to adopt to show you the bootcuts. Hmm.

On the Sunday, I felt okay wearing the boot cuts sitting in a kiddies soft play centre but on the Monday whilst standing in Zara amongst the young trendies in their skinnies, I felt distinctly old fashioned and a little mumsy. And then it dawned on me that I had done this look 8 years ago albeit with slightly different shoes. And even worse than that ... that I looked like I probably hadn't moved on from 8 years ago. Aargh! Part of me wonders if the addition of a nice seventies inspired bag like the below might have added a little ironic conviction to the whole ensemble ...

And part of me thinks .... probably not.

Part of me thinks why don't I look like this? All kind of laid back and cool.

And then I realise ...

Ahh ... it's because I don't have the hat. Drat!

Ahh ... I'm not Jessica Alba. Drat!

Last Note :

  • This doesn't mean you won't see me in these again. Unless you slate them to death.

  1. There is nothing wrong with those jeans ,they look fab, I like the tops too, what a nice surprise to have some sunshine over the weekend, I was about to put away some of my summer clothes but m hanging on as long as I can hoping we may get some more sun. I wear bootcut jeans all the time and they go with most tops and tunics and all types of shoe, love the post as usual x Dawn

    1. It's been years since I've worn them Dawn and I've really got a mental block on them now for me. I think all the magazines have conditioned them out of my consciousness.

But the weather has been good hasn't it but I now think it's officially time to pack the summer stuff away.

  2. This cracked me up. Mostly because I just went through all my clothes that I have packed away (you know, the stuff you never wear but are too chicken to part with?) and found about 5 pairs of bootleg jeans. Seriously. And thought, can I wear them? Has enough time passed? Will they look fresh again? Or just old? And honestly, I couldn't decide one way or the other. So I put them back in the box ;) Keep it up though, and I might just join you!

    1. I have 3 pairs of bootlegs in my possession. One pair is a Diesel pair and I kept them because they were the first pair of jeans that really made a difference to the way I looked in jeans. The Grumps doesn't like them though as he says they make my bum look too small :o) And I have the same argument as you in my head - fresh or dated, fresh or dated? I keep trying though. Maybe I'll park them again till the mags say otherwise ... when I'm ready to follow the herd.

  3. I love that IM top on you - and the other one too! I know what you mean about the bootcut jeans, I put on my white ones and then opt for the skinnies. I've seen that IM top around and wondered what it looked like on, look fab. Would get much more wear out of it than the crisp white shirt I bought for the ill-fated photos...

    1. The IM top is a breeze to wear - so easy and it requires no thought and no tugging in to place or anything. And don't be so hard on yourself - I bet you look amazing in the crisp white shirt photo. Talking of which, it always reminds me of the family photo episode in Modern Family. Love that show.

  4. I have a few pairs of old boot it's but I must admit I haven't worn them for a few years now.... I'm the same - just feel a bit dated in them though I daren't throw them away either as I used to love them. Time will tell! Yours do look great thoug, I think because of the whole 70s vibe that you do so well :-) x

    1. I have a bit of a love hate relationshop with them too but won't throw them away. The only way I can wear them these days is to do the whole seventies thing and hope someone else gets it rather than I'm past it. I'll keep trying. Dog and bone springs to mind.

  5. I love bootcuts but you look better in yours! I got them out this spring & was super excited by them, wore them a handful of times & popped them back into storage! I think the only way to wear them is to 70s funk them up & you looked fabulous in yours! I wish I looked like the super cool college kids on the bus on my way to work! Apologies as I'm so behind on blog reading its not funny & need a marathon catch up with yours! <3 Ax

    1. I think I was inspired by a mag article extolling flares and how fab they looked. I can't quite do the whole flare thing as I'm a bit of a midget so I have to keep the shape more streamlined. But I know what you mean - if you have youth on your side, everything looks funky and if you're past a certain age, you just look old wearing some of the trends which happened the first time round. Sigh.

Don't worry about the blog reading - I am behind too. I have a whole heap of blogs to catch up with and posts to write - I have been lax.

  6. LOL. It's funny how long the skinny leg jean has been in 'vogue' - I remember owning a pair of slightly flared boot cut jeans, in this dark indigo wash, and they were the most flattering jeans ever. You look great in your boot cuts!

    1. It's been about 8-9 years if memory serves me correctly. I was still in bootlegs when I left work in 2006 and was just contemplating skinny legs when pregnant with Ben looking at my huge profile with baby bump and carrot legs in the changing room mirror and wondering "what the ???"

That Mossy has a lot to answer for.

  7. I like them and I love the 70's vibe - it's super cool and funky! I gave a pair of old bootcuts away this year - they were all out of shape so had to go - but I have a Zara pair still in my possession which haven't come out for a while - may have to be next year though - the weather will surely warrant skinnes and boots very soon!

    1. I'll probably give them another bash later on in the year Jenny. They are better with sandals but I might go for the turtleneck and Love Story Ali McGraw thing next. Or I might just leave them in the box and let that one fester for a bit longer. That might be a good idea.

  8. It's all in the styling with the bootcuts and you have styled them perfectly!! I have 2 pairs, one I can wear with flatties and another pair that require towering heels! I just can't get to grips with what to put on my top half though. Need to dig them out and have another go with them now that you have given me a few ideas Sue :0)

    1. Now this I want to see - I want to see how you wear the bootlegs. You get all your looks spot on so I want to see how you carry this one off. Challenge?

  9. You are so adorable! I've been wearing bootcuts recently too. Well more like flares. With platforms. Not sure how I feel about them at the moment because mine are so wide that I practically have no feet when I wear heels! There is a pic on my Instagram if you're curious. I think you nailed it here tho - love the wash on your jeans and that bagggg!

    1. I think I need some proper flares but I am too chicken and too titch to carry off that much volume. I had a nosey at your instagram - they're not too flarey at all - they look good.

And yep the bag is good but the summer is gone. I don't mind waiting for the sale for this one.

  10. Y'see?? I fully understand your dilemma. 'Cos I kinda' love bootcuts ... and I think that for the petite of the world like ourselves, they are waaay more flattering than skinnies. They somehow elongate the leg. I'm waiting for them to come back in ... officially! In the meantime, I'm afraid to wear them, in case I get looks of pity from the young and trendy in the locality!

    1. Every pair of bootcuts I have, when I take a picture of them in the mirror front on, they look awful. They only photograph well from the side and I'm not going around walking like a crab. But in real life they look great or in my deluded eyes they look great. But I still see lots of people in them ... yet ... I'm still not quite ready. I need to see it in the mags. I need convincing too.

  11. No no no, you DO look cool! And I love the 70's look, too! Not all of it, but bootcuts, yes! And heeled knee high boots w a straight (not tapered) heel. And A line knee length skirts, and corduroy. And and and...

    1. We can be 70s sisters together then. I have the heeled knee high boots with blocky heels too. 3 pairs to be precise. And I love A line skirts. And a big chunky scarf. Missing the poloneck/turtleneck though. It's all very Love Story isn't it?

  12. I tried my bootcut jeans the other day. They were my favorites and garnered enough compliments to kick my ego into action. But now......I just can't. Truly can't. No idea why but I'm out of love for them at the moment. Maybe that's cos I'm still addicted to ripped boyfriend jeans and track pants (both are so forgiving that I'd managed to pack on weight without knowing!).

    1. It's the first time I've worn bootlegs in a few years out of the door. They do feel wrong for me.

It's not the right time yet.

  13. I did the same as Marlene - tried on mine while clearing out and couldn't do it either. I felt so frumpy. I actually gave them to charity...I rest my case :)

    1. I know - I know. I've held on to a couple of pairs but have probably given more than 5 pairs away to charity. I found myself asking "are you sure you used to look good in these? Really???"
